The British entertainment scene has been thrown into mourning today the 21st of February 2022, at the news of the death of renown media personality and Music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards who passed away after a break illness. Jamal, a well celebrated young media excecutive who was the founder of SB.TV and online musical platform which played a role in the rise of stars like, Dave, Ed Sheeran and Skepta and Jesse J. The news broke during the early hours of today leaving everyone including fans and celebrities in a state of shock and devastation.
Jamal was born in Luton, England, and spent his early years there before moving to Acton, West London where he lived with his mother, popular actress Brenda Edwards. Prior to his untimely demise, Jamal Edwards was considered as one of the most influential figures in the British entertainment scene, paving way for some of the most successful musical figures out of the UK in recent years. When Edwards was 15, he was given a video camera, with which he filmed friends rapping and performing and uploaded them to his YouTube channel. He’s well recognised as part of the pioneers of some of highly celebrated music careers in the United Kingdom, as he filmed some artists before they became well-known such as Jesse J‘s first acoustic video. He also filmed others such as Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, Emeli Sande, Rita Ora, Dave, Krept and Konan, Nines, Tori Kelly, Bugzy Malone, Mist and more.
A multitasker extraordinaire, asides being a music entrepreneur, he was also an author, director, DJ and founder of the online urban music platform SB.TV which was launched in 2006. He also had his philanthropic contributions, Edwards was an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust, a youth charity which helps young people set up their own businesses and headed by the Prince of Wales. In 2021, Edwards set up Jamal Edwards Delve, a project aimed at refurbishing and reopening youth centres. He was a light and positive influence to the youth, who through his life deeds, laid the blueprint for young black men with dreams of becoming an impactful household name in British pop culture.
Countless musical stars, fans and other renowned personalities have been paying their various tributes to the Late icon who the world lost at such a young age. During her tribute to her son, Brenda Edwards described Jamal as “the centre of our world”. In a statement read out on ITV’s Good Morning Britain and shared on Loose Women’s Twitter account, Mrs. Edwards said: “It is with the deepest heartache that I confirm that my beautiful son Jamal Edwards passed away yesterday morning after a sudden illness”, she closed up her announcement by thanking the entire public and everyone showing love and support to the Edwards family.
Music stars like Dave, Aj Tracey, Mahalia, Lady Leshurr and more entertainers have taken to Twitter to pay homage to the influential Jamal Edwards. The Mayor of London Saadiq Khan and the organizers of the MOBO Awards ceremony also paid their respects.
