INTRODUCTION
You might not have heard about the artiste Obongjayar mainly because he’s not based in Nigeria, but one thing is certain; if Sarz ever decides to do a project with you of whatever sort, there must be something illuminating about your craft. The perfect word to describe the artiste and the review of this short body of work is “special”. It is nothing like we have heard from any afrobeats project ever dropped, and it’s the atomic combination of the legendary Sarz, who is doing well to becoming untouchable as the GOAT (greatest of all time) in afrobeats production, and Obongjayar, an absolutely explosive artiste with a golden voice so captivating in the way it passes across its message through his very attractive chords.
TRACKS REVIEW
This article would highlight 2 tracks off the 4-track EP for extreme excellence. These carefully picked out songs in the writer’s opinion sufficiently explains to the readers & listeners why the writer decided to use the word “special” in describing how good the project is.
GONE GIRL (Track 2)
Afrobeats masterclass. This still doesn’t properly describe how good the song is. The SINYM acronym isn’t just bants, Sarz is actually not your mate. The beat at the song’s intro introduces you to how amazing the song will be. The song is about a man describing how lifeless his woman apparently acts to him, or maybe is, and Obongjayar expressed this sonorously with the powerful lyrics he chose. The beat itself is electric, and that makes the song a super collaboration because the artiste matched the excellence, and mostly the energy and vibe of the beat. It’s the biggest song on the EP currently, and of absolute repeat value.
IF YOU SAY (Track 3)
If you ever wanted a song that’ll give you nostalgia flashbacks from where we are coming from in Nigerian music, and how much we have developed our sound as the “afrobeats” of today, this is the ideal song. The songwriting and lyricism throughout the EP is worthy of highlight, and is no different on this track, where Obongjayar urges his woman to show him the genuine love he desires from her. Again, SINYM, because the song is produced to perfection. The piercing beat effect combined with the outstanding delivery by the artiste makes this song a favorite, not for clubs and party night outs, but something more soulful.
ALBUM SUMMARY
The Swetness EP which consists of 4 tracks spanning 14 mins, features Sarz on the beat and Obongjayar on the vocals. The genre can be described as afro-electric, as its construction (which is definitely afrobeats) is somewhat astronomical and distinct, different from what we are used to. It will be up there as one of the best projects Sarz has ever involved himself with, and a great stepping stone into the mainstream scene for the amazing Obongjayar.
