Courtney “Nines” Freckleton – the distinguished rapper from Harlesden – is one of those artistic achievement stories who swears that fame won’t alter him. By having a title in common with his second album from 2018, Crop Circle, his fourth album has a strong connection to past work.
Following his song, Tony Soprano, from the last release, the lead single, Tony Soprano 2, celebrates gangsters. Even though I’m wealthy, he raps, “Still the same old me even though I’m rich/And it’s still gang gang, I’ll never switch”. His music’s central theme – a rap career that started more than ten years ago but hasn’t entirely eliminated the necessity to earn money in other ways – has been hinted at in earlier titles.
Nonetheless, it remains to be seen how the critics will react to this fourth album because it differs somewhat from the Nines of old – even from Crop Circle in 2018 and Crabs in a Bucket in 2020, where he included elements of Afroswing and more into his style. Although Nines hasn’t always been pessimistic, as evidenced by those two albums, he sounds more joyful, more carefree, and more at ease with himself than we’ve ever actually heard.
