Nigerians Shine at this year’s Mobo Awards 2021 Event.
It’s been four years since the highly celebrated British award ceremony graced a live stage. For the first time since 2017, after the year 2018 and 2019 witnessed a total absence of the award show, and the 2020 edition basically being a pre-recorded show as result of the global pandemic, the prestigious MOBO Awards has returned this year 2021 as a live event, at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
This year’s show saw the recognition and celebration of crafts from black music acts and music emanating from the black culture in the United Kingdom, Africa and diaspora. The live show was hosted by British-Zimbabwean comedian Munya Chawawa alongside singer and Pop group Little Mix member Leigh-Anne Pinnock, it featured live performances by Pa Salieu, Ghetts, Tems, Stefflon Don and Ms Banks, Bree Runway, Enny, Potter Payper, NSG.
As usual, the categories ranged from Video of the year, and Song of the year, to best music acts in various respective genres including Gospel, Grime, Reggae and Drill. These genres had some of our favorite entertainers clinching the wins in their respective categories.
Another notable record for the books during this year’s show, is number of artists who are of Nigerian heritage scoring the win in some of the most spectacular categories. Nigerian Afro-beats superstar Wizkid grabbed the awards for Best international act and Best African act category respectively. A total of six of this year’s awards went to artistes who are either from Nigeria or of Nigerian ethnicities.
The Award for the Best Grime act Went to British/Nigerian rapper Skepta who has bagged a number of MOBO‘s in previous years. British/Nigerian emcee Dave scored the win for Album of the year, with his Second studio album “We’re All Alone In This Together“. The Best female act for the year was awarded to Nigerian born entertainer Little Simz, while Tion Wayne (real name; Dennis Junior Odunwo) scored win in the top rated for Song of the year with the chart topping remix of the track “Body” by himself and Russ Millons.
