A Star in The Making – Review of Ayra Starr’s EP

Mavin Records introduced Ayra Starr to the music scene with the release of her self-titled debut EP. As it is with every new music act, she uses this debut project to showcase her talent, and make a pass at music stardom.

The first track, “Away”, is a single released off the EP, and it is currently garnering streams across different music platforms.

She sings with a distinctly clear voice over a slow-paced tune that matches her perceived mood on the track, and sets a calm tone for listeners.

In a bid to deliver a sensational song, she taps into the emotions of healing and freedom from the sadness accompanying heart ache. Also, her lyricism and delivery are put on display for listeners to take note of.

Her lines on the second verse: “understand, understand I won’t, understand I won’t be the girl that used to cry, cry about a man that never came through” have a sincere personal touch which is sure to connect with listeners who appreciate music that portrays genuine feelings.

The transition to a slightly faster paced tune on the next track is very smooth, and it is a mark of the quality music production on the project. A perfect blend of instrumentals leaves it all to Ayra to show what she can do.

She steps up to the challenge, and “Ija” brings out Ayra’s sultry lyricism that matches a tempo perfectly suited for sensual gyration.

“DITR” reveals to listeners another layer of her musical artistry, which is her ability to write, and sing about a story.

She sings along to cool instrumentals about teenage/youthful exuberance, and the choices made that contrasts with the moral upbringing imparted by parents.

Ayra Starr shows that her music can mirror societal issues, it is the mark of a grounded artiste who can strike a balance between making conscious music, and mainstream party joints.

Slow-paced to moderately upbeat tempos has been a constant while transitioning from one track to the next, and it continues on to the next track, “Sare”.

It is a standard Afro-pop beat/tune without any over the top beats and intricate instrumentals which allows for her vocals to take center stage, and she sings a vibrant love song highlighted by her own sonorous voice as backup.

The EP rounds off with a final track, “Memories”. Ayra Starr delivers a short cool themed performance that syncs with the mostly calm tone that dominates the whole project, and it is a befitting way to draw the curtains to a close on her debut project.

Introducing her captivating voice to listeners with this five track teaser is bound to get everyone who listens wanting more. Ayra Starr’s music is both soothing to the mind, and moderately sensual; a combination that may go on to be her signature style of music.

Ayra Starr follows a similar path like many Nigerian music teen sensations before her who sought to take the industry by surprise. Whether she achieved this will be determined by how her project is received by listeners.

It cannot be disputed that this is a commendable debut EP by Ayra Starr. It is evident that with her talent, and the nurturing environment provided by her record label, she has a very promising music career ahead.
